Fall of the Berlin Wall

20 year ago today. While some seem inclined to forget the significance, others, including the current U.S. President and the current German Chancellor seem to think it was do to some sort of benevolence on the part of Gorbachev.

However, the real hero, the liberator of millions was:

  1. If I hadn't lived through the time I would not have any idea how history is being rewritten. Gorbachev is currently cast as the architect of the downfall of communism in Eastern Europe, when in reality he was the prison warden who let the inmates escape when he realized the inmates outnumbered the guards. Reagan is purposefully left out of the equation completely; so much so that people speak of the "inevitability" of the collapse of communism. Tell that to those who live in North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Cuba, and China.
